T.I. sweeps Billboard's hip-hop awards
T.I. was hip-hop's big winner at the Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas on Tuesday night. In fact, he was the only winner, sweeping all five awards -- Rap Artist of the Year, Rap Album of the Year, Rap Album Artist of the Year, Rap Songs Artist of the Year, and Rap Videoclips Artist of the Year.
Of course, T.I. probably knew that going in, since the Billboard Awards are determined by the magazine's year-end chart listings, which are based on record sales and airplay. His fourth solo album, King, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard albums chart in March. Despite T.I.'s good showing, he was outdone by Mary J. Blige. She took home nine honors for The Breakthrough, which has sold 2.6 million copies since being released in December 2005.
But one award that got away from Blige as well as Beyonce was Female Artist of the Year. That went to Rihanna, who was thrilled to outduel the duo. "I really can't feel my legs, this is phenomenal," said Rihanna as she accepted the award. "That was a really tough category." Chris Brown was named New Artist of the Year, Male of Artist of the Year and Artist of the Year Awards. Blige and Janet Jackson were among the performers at the show, which was unique because of the absence of hosts. Britney Spears and Paris Hilton both backed out within the past week. They weren't missed. Click here for the full list of hip-hop and R&B winners.
