Dr. Dre signs film deal with New Line
Dr. Dre has agreed to a multiyear deal with New Line Cinema to produce comedy and horror films under the Crucial Films name. "This is a natural switch for me, since I've directed a lot of music videos," Dre told Variety, which first reported the story. "And I eventually want to get into directing." Longtime Dre collaborator Phillip Atwell will co-produce the projects, which are expected to focus on dark comedies to begin with. Dre scored films for New Line in the past and that will play a part in his new role as well. Dre credited New Line's president of production, Toby Emmerich, with luring him into movies. "He said, 'I want to be your Jimmy Iovine,'" Dre told Variety. "There was nothing more he needed to say." Emmerich told Variety he thinks Dre's Midas touch will translate well to the film industry. "Everything Dre has worked on becomes a hit, and one of the reasons for that is that he never put his name on anything that he doesn't really believe in," Emmerich said. "His records have always been very narrative in nature, and you can tell from his songs that he understands how to tell a story. We're excited to work with him as he branches out into the film world." No word on what effect -- if any -- Dre's movie-making business will have on the release date of Detox, the long-awaited album that late last year Dre guaranteed would come out in 2007.
